This illustrated talk will show changes to the town, starting with the coming of the railway, the main industries, schools, significant events and buildings. Much has changed, but much remains relatively unaltered and the talk will endeavour to show this. Recently scanned colour transparencies from the 1960s and ’70s bring the past much closer and may well trigger memories of scenes long forgotten.
Sherborne Museum has an extensive collection of photographs covering the period from 1851 to the present. The collection includes photographic prints, glass plate negatives, colour transparencies and postcards. It covers all aspects of the town and town life. It also includes images from the surrounding villages.
Graham Bendell is a retired local government officer with 40 years of service in Somerset and Dorset. Since 2014 he has been a trustee and volunteer at Sherborne Museum.
