From 2001 onwards, Michael Hill has been researching and writing on Dorset buildings. Firstly this work concentrated on the county’s rich seam of country houses, the results published in two volumes: East Dorset Country Houses (2013), and West Dorset Country Houses (2014). Parallel with this, he was asked in 2011 to revised the Buildings of England volume for Dorset, incorporating his country-house investigations, but also covering all other buildings of architectural significance, including a wide range of church architecture, town buildings, and the hitherto under-regarded transport structures, such as railway stations and the iconic Cobb at Lyme Regis. His work has also highlighted periods of building not previously highly regarded, such as the coastal Art Deco of the 1930s, municipal buildings including post-offices, and of course the new village at Poundbury. This new edition of the ‘Pevsner’ was published in 2018.
