A visit to one of the finest privately owned Grade 1 listed buildings in Somerset

Ven House and gardens

Ven House in Milborne Port is one of the finest privately owned Grade 1 listed buildings in Somerset.  It remains in private hands, and is rarely open to the public. Thanks to the generosity of its owners, Sherborne Historical Society obtained privileged access to visit the house and gardens, recognised as of special historic interest.

Constructed in the William and Mary style, the house, was completed in 1698–1700 for James Medlycott; and later enlarged by Nathaniel Ireson, who retained the west front of the earlier house. The property passed through the Medlycott family through the 18th and 19th centuries. Much of the estate was disposed of after the First World War, and the house itself sold in 1957. Since then it has had a number of owners. It remains in private hands and is rarely open to the public. Sherbone Historical Society was fortunate to obtain privileged access to visit the house and gardens, which are recognized as of special historic interest.
