Dunster Castle and Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Cottage

Date: Thursday 10 September 2015

Visits to Dunster Castle, and gardens, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Cottage

Dunster Castle and Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Cottage

The coach will arrive in Dunster Village for coffee in the Castle Coffee House around 10.15. Dunster Castle was the ancestral home of the Luttrell family acquired by the National Trust in 1976. The Luttrells bought the Castle in 1376 and the resultant mixture of mediaeval masonry, Jacobean windows and Victorian doors highlight a long history of changing fortunes displayed in the wide variety of furnishings and fine paintings. The Castle and gardens have a wide view over the surrounding countryside and for those not fleet of foot a buggy will take you up to the entrance. After an introductory talk at 11.00 you will have a self guided tour of about an hour. Return then to the Village, where there is a good selection of places to eat lunch at your expense. You will then have a chance to follow a self guided walk around this fascinating village, armed with the Historic Dunster leaflet, downloaded from

We will then re-join the coach at 14.30 for our journey to Nether Stowey and Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Cottage which is also National Trust. Arriving around 15.00 we will be divided into 2 or 3 groups for a guided tour of the 17th Century home of this great Romantic Poet for 3 years from 1797. Tea of your choice will be available at the Courtyard Tea Rooms, before we leave for Sherborne at 16.30.
