Dulverton and Knightshayes

Tuesday 5th September 2017

The coach will drive via the Exe Valley to  Dulverton, which is the gate to the Exmoor National Park, arriving around 10.00. After coffee at the Copper Kettle we will meet guides from the Heritage Centre for a  1h 30 min walk around the many historic buildings of the town, the inspiration among others of Lorna Doone. Famous families lived nearby including Lord Carnavon of Tutankamoun fame. From midday until 13.45 you can have lunch at your expense and explore further. Dulverton is a popular destination and with only 3 suitable restaurants offering a selection of meals, we can reserve places.

At 13.45 the Coach will return down the Exe Valley to Knightshayes Court run by the National Trust. You will be met at reception and there will be a short introductory talk at 14.30. From there the coach can drop you off at the house or you can take an 8 minute walk. A buggy may also be possible.  Knightshayes is a Victorian gothic country house with richly decorated interiors and a fine garden. The work of William Burges combines mediaeval romanticism  with lavish Victorian decoration. As well as many fine views the famous Walled Garden on the way back to Reception is a must. There you will also find the café, where you can enjoy a cream tea or tea and cake from 16.00 to 16.45. The coach will meet you at Reception.
