Following a talk to The Sherborne Historical Society in 2013, Martin Papworth will review the findings of his PhD thesis.  His field surveys, documentary research and excavations, when linked to the work of the wider archeological community, led to the publication of “The Search For The Durotriges” which set out to define the character of late Iron Age communities of the Dorset environs.  The talk will re-appraise this book in the light of recent discoveries made possible by geophysical survey, LIDAR and archaeological excavation.

Dr Martin Papworth has been Archaeologist at the National Trust for the South West of England for 32 years, working particularly in Dorset, Somerset, Gloucestershire and parts of Wiltshire and Devon. His publications include:

The Roman Celtic Temple at Badbury Rings

The Search for The Durotriges

Deconstructing the Durotriges : A Definition of the LIA communities
