Dickens lays bare Victorian Society, warts and all, but what about Victorian artists?  This lecture will debate how far and for what reasons artists went in search of ‘realism’ and how realistic their paintings actually were.

The accompanying picture, Luke Fildes : Applicants for Admission to a Casual Ward 1874 gives some idea of the complicated view of reality which characterized Victorian painting.

Julian Halsby is a well-known painter, art critic and author with a career that includes being Senior Lecturer at Croydon College of Art, running the Highgate Gallery, London, with his wife Miranda and continuing to paint and exhibit his own work. He is an accredited NADFAS lecturer specializing in the period 1850-1914.
