Wells and Cheddar

Wednesday 12th April 2017

The coach will drive first to Wells, where we shall have coffee in the Crown Hotel around 9.30. At 10.00 we shall meet our guide on the Cathedral Green, who will take us on a historic walk around the smallest city in England. and in a relatively small area. She will include the exterior of the Cathedral and also Vicarage Close of which the 40 buildings are very much part of Cathedral life. By 11.30 she will leave us at the by the Bishops Palace, giving us time until 13.30 to have lunch at our expense and to explore further.

A short drive will take us to Cheddar and the Cheddar Cheese Factory.   Here you will learn about the history of cheese making and see it being made. After questions, you will be offered a wide variety to taste and the chance to buy not just cheese but also cheeseboards and other utensils. The coach will then proceed to  Gough’s Cave in the Cheddar Gorge. Unearthed by Richard Gough and his family, an audio guide will take you round a small part of this huge cave, where you will not only hear the history of Cheddar Man, but will also see St Paul’s Cathedral and Solomon’s Temple. As an alternative, if you wish to remain on the flat, the Museum of Palaeontology will give a fascinating description of life in 7000 B.C. and earlier.
